Dept. of Boo-'Effing-Hoo

When a One-of-a-Kind Car Looks So Last Year. Chrysler had no idea that the PT Cruiser would be such a hit when it went on sale in the spring of 2000, or that its buzz would evaporate three years later. By Micheline Maynard. [New York Times: Technology]

Dude, it looks like Col. Klink's staff car!!! Trendy? Nazi? Trendy?

A fascinating panorama from Peter Murphy:

A picture named bapticon.jpgThousands of Jehovah Witnesses are in town for a big Convention at Olympic Park.  Part of the action today was this mass baptism ceremony - panorama. This venue, once known as Olympic Stadium - built for the Olympics for the opening/closing ceremonies, athletics etc - is now called Telstra Stadium (following the universal practice in Sydney these days of selling off corporate naming rights for major sporting venues). A picture named twistercicle.jpg Click it, make it BiG.

Dept. of The Squirrel Who Came Out Of The Cold

A picture named coldsquirrel.jpg These Squirrels Are Super Cool. The arctic ground squirrel can lower its body temperature to that of a popsicle. If scientists can figure out how, hibernating space flight and longer shelf life for transplant organs may be possible. By Louise Knapp. [Wired News]

2004: A Squirrel Odyssey!

The arctic ground squirrel can drop its internal temperature to as low as minus three degrees Celsius. While another animal's blood would freeze in its veins, the hibernating squirrel's keeps right on flowing.

Scientists at the University of Alaska Fairbanks want to tap into these supercooling talents for human use. One of the applications they foresee is long-distance space travel.

I can see it now....

"Open the Habitrail doors, HAL."

"I'm sorry Rocky, I can't do that."
